External parasites

A common problem in veterinary medicine are the ectoparasitosis, ie external parasites that are placed on the skin of pets. These parasites are usually more problematic during the spring, summer and autumn, but today, with heating and cooling systems for homes, get an optimal environment to grow throughout the year. So not only be prevented in the warm seasons, but throughout the year.

There are a wide variety of external parasites and each causes different signs. In addition, their presence is not only a problem, but other transmitters are often more serious diseases.

Fleas: The mere presence of fleas on the animal skin can cause skin irritation, but in many cases this problem is increased by an allergic reaction to flea saliva when the sink. In the latter case, a single flea can trigger a major skin problem in an animal allergy.

Clinical signs can be highly variable, since it does not take up a significant pruritus, crusting, hair loss … Usually the area on the back and tail are the most affected. In animals with allergies these signs intensify and can be full body. Cats tend to be less sensitive to this parasite, so you may not realize that we have and not try, hindering us in removing dogs or other pets.

It should be noted that only 5-10% of these fleas are in the animal, the rest is to the environment and it is therefore important to remove them from the house as a pet.

People can also have fleas but always prefer to be on a cat or dog.

Ticks: are arthropods that feed on the blood of its host. The cause skin irritation and allergies, ear infections and blood loss in cases of large parasitacions is a problem, but what really worries us are the diseases that can be transmitted. These diseases are usually blood parasites that cause anemia and other systemic symptoms such as fever, apathy, weight loss and bleeding. Among them we can name the bebesiosi, anaplasmosis, hemobartonelosis, ehrilichiosis …

Ticks can parasitize both pets and people. You must be careful when removing them as animals, tearing them, we could leave a piece in the skin.

Leishmania and sand flies: The sand flies are insects like mosquitoes that can transmit a parasite called Leishmania blood. Too often these insects bite our pets the months between spring and autumn, the cooler hours in places with humidity. The parasite reproduces in the blood cells and, depending on the dog and its immunity is more or less likely to develop the disease. Signs are very varied and can cause range from dermatitis and alopecia with crusting around the eyes, ears and pads and with lameness, kidney failure, liver failure or many other effects.

These parasites are more common but there are others such as scabies, mites that come about within the skin layers and are very pruritic, the myiasis, some flies that breed and are placed in areas such as wounds or contaminated important bodily secretions, the helminths, a kind of worm larvae which can be found in the hair follicles or the different layers of the skin or flying insects, which can cause local inflammation or generalized if they cause an allergy, being able to ignite the entire facial area and neck.

There is a wide variety of products to address these parasitacions. In the event that our pets have it, we always try to remember also that there are other animals in the home environment, with emphasis on the bed, toys and areas frequently.

However parasites are difficult to remove and therefore always recommend a good prophylaxis. The most used are the pipettes, collars and sprays topics. Usually come prepared to prevent several species at the same time, depending on the trade.

Some of these are Scalibor collar, the main effect of which is to protect against sand flies, but also has effect on flea and tick, tick act on the Frontline pipettes, adult fleas and flea eggs and larvae, the pipettes ADVANTIX Flea and tick protected but also actruen administered every 2 weeks on phlebotomy.

Always a good prophylaxis is recommended all year round, but during spring and summer, the Hospital Costa Brava try to avoid as much these infestations.
